Mocha Moguls: 3 Business Savvy Celebrity Women

Tia-and-Tamera milkyBy Nomalanga Mhlauli-Moses

We’ve all heard a lot of horror stories about celebrities who had thriving music and acting careers or were high paid athletes but went on to lose it all and end up filing bankruptcy. This, of course, proves that how much money you make is not as important as how much money you keep and what you do with that money.

Below are three women who went beyond fame and put their business skills to use:

Venus Williams

Venus Williams is known as a tennis pro and has an amazing story about how her father and mother coached her and her sister, Serena Williams, all the way to every tennis world championship you can think of.

Even though Williams is an accomplished world champion tennis player, she still went beyond the tennis world and into the business world. The superstar has made a name for herself in the world of interior design with her interior design firm, V Starr Interiors. In 2007 she took her design skills to fashion and launched her own fashion label,  EleVen which features fashionable sportswear.

Another little known fact about Venus Williams is that she and her sister, Serena are also co-owners of the Miami Dolphins. In 2010 Williams added yet another title to her repertoire and became a New York Times best-selling author with her book, Come to Win.

 Tia Mowry-Hardrict and Tamera Mowry-Housley

It is next to impossible to mention either one of the Mowry twins without also mentioning the other. While the two women have both grown up, gotten married, had a baby and cultivated separate careers, we still remember them as the cute twins from the sitcom Sister, Sister.

While the twins have enjoyed their acting careers, they say that they always wanted to go into business together but were not quite sure what direction to take. When they both got married and started down the motherhood road their business was born! Upon seeing that they had needs as expecting and new mothers for which they could not find products, they decided to create those products.

The twins’ company Need Brands supports mothers and their babies by providing edgy and wholesome products. The twins’ had a positive reality show in which we got a glimpse of their lives and how they created one of their products Milky which is a range of teas that help women with lactation. The business savvy sisters also launched  “Stretchy!,” an all natural moisturizing cream to fight stretch marks.

I particularly love to follow the Mowry twins because they are such an amazing example of women who continue to balance Marriage, Motherhood and Moneymaking. In addition to building their business, the mothers and wives still continue to pursue television careers. Tia is currently starring in and producing Nick at Nite’s comedy show Instant Mom and Tamera is a co-host on the  talk show “The Real” on FOX.
